Varicose veins pose 5x risk of DVT

People with varicose veins are 5x more likely to suffer deep-vein thrombosis (DVT), according to new research. The study of 425,000 people suggests the condition should be considered a major red flag that someone is at risk of DVT or PE (pulmonary embolism).

Every year in the UK 67,000 people suffer a DVT and it is important that people understand their risk during situations that increase DVT risk, such as immobility through surgery or prolonged travel. Between 2-10% of people flying more than 4 hours without wearing well-fitting flight socks suffer a symptomless DVT.
